Month in Review: September, 2016

Ian and I spent the month of September saying goodbye to summer. Our weekends were filled with beach days, boat rides, and attending local events. We tried to soak in as much warm weather as we could before the changing leaves brought a chill to the air. Here are some of our highlights!

The Badgers traveled up to Lambeau to face off LSU early in the month. With the streets flooded with fans decked out in red, we felt like we were back in Madison for the day! It was nostalgic to dust off our college gear and tailgate with friends. My brother was even in town, so the day was extra special!

Over Labor Day Weekend we drove up to Door County and enjoyed one last beach day. It was bittersweet to sit on the sand, watching the sun set, and knowing we were close to closing the chapter on another season.

We couldn’t leave Door County without hiking to the shoreline filled with balancing stones. There is something magical about this hidden beach and it pulls us back every time we are in the area. After taking a few moments to soak in the view, we wandered around searching for the perfect stones to construct our own creations.

While searching for events in our area I came across a campus preview day that listed boat rides and horse-drawn carriage tours. That was enough to entice me! We spent the afternoon strolling around the courtyards, eating lunch from the food trucks and listening to live music.

Towards the middle of the month Ian and I packed up the car and drove down to Madison for my friends wedding shower. It was lovely to see many of my high school friends and reminisce when we lived close together! My sister and I even snuck in some quality time and I left with a full-heart and sore cheeks from laughing.

While the Pokémon Go craze is slowly dying down, every once in awhile Ian asks to walk downtown to take advantage of lures. Luckily, the walk weaves along a riverside path that ends at the love-lock bridge. With beautiful views like this there is not much to complain about!

Our month ended with an event I had been anxiously awaiting – the Alpaca Open House!! Yes, that is right! Ian and I were able to spend a day at an alpaca farm feeding the animals, cooing over the babies, and listening to music. While browsing the gift shop I found these giant fluffy alpaca slippers and fell in love! Sadly, they were $85 so I had to leave without them, but we had a great time learning more about these cute animals.

Oh, August. You were good to me. With two family birthdays and our wedding anniversary we had a month packed with celebrations, but surprisingly there wasn’t any cake. That just goes to show you where cake lyes on our list of preferred desserts! Instead we satisfied our sweet craving by roasting s’mores and I was able to check another item off my summer bucket list.

I had the pleasure of working on a few new and exciting design projects this month! I love collaborating with other creatives and can’t wait to share the finished designs in the upcoming weeks. (Stay tuned!) While it’s easy to get lost in a project, I made it a point to leave my desk and take an afternoon walk every day. With scenery like this, these walks quickly became a highlight of my day.

At the beginning of the month, Ian and I packed our bags and drove to Milwaukee for a friend’s wedding. The weekend was filled with twinkle lights, signature cocktails, and lots of laughter. Oh, and did I mention dancing?! The guests invited to this wedding knew how to bust a move which lead to multiple dance-offs throughout the night.

After brunch the next morning, Ian and I took advantage of being in Milwaukee and wandered around the Third Ward. We ended up on the rivers edge watching boats pass by and soaking in the sun. Milwaukee is a beautiful city, and it was nice to take a moment to reflect over the love-filled weekend before we got back in the car to embark on our journey home.

After a few days to recuperate from our wedding weekend adventures, Ian and I donned our green and gold for a preseason Packer game! I’m not a huge sports fan, but I can get behind anything that serves hot chocolate. So while it drizzled during the second half of the game, I was snuggled inside my rain coat sipping my drink. Overall, I would say the outing was a success!

Toward the end of the month Ian and I made the trip to Madison to celebrate the August birthdays in my family! We had an eventful weekend packed with golfing, going out for dinner, and an impromptu Olympic games competition. Lots of laughs were shared and it was hard to pack up and head home on Sunday.

Ian and I ended the month by spending a rainy afternoon at the local art fair. Nestled under our umbrellas, we strolled between vendors daydreaming about how we will decorate our future home. We picked up a few business cards before settling down and listening to the performers on the main stage. Once our shoes squished with every step, we decided it was time to call it a day and head home to dry off.

I hope you all had a wonderful August and enjoyed this glimpse inside our month.

The month began on a high note with another trip! I swear Ian and I don’t normally travel this much, but it just so happened that his 25th birthday fell over his brother’s 8th grade graduation ceremony so we jumped at the chance to fly to Florida.

We usually visit his family over the winter holidays so I wasn’t prepared on how warm Florida is in June! Cue many afternoons spent at the pool cooling off.

We had planned to relax and catch up on laundry when we returned from Florida, but Gaelic Storm headlined Irish Fest that weekend and we couldn’t pass up an opportunity to see them again for only $8! The night was spent watching the Trinity Irish Dancers, playing rounds of Uno while eating dinner on a picnic blanket, and helping Ian try on kilts. He didn’t buy one this time around (they didn’t have his family tartan) but I’m sure the purchase is in the near future. Stay tuned for photos!

Another exciting change happened this month! I accepted a 6 month graphic design project that requires me to work on location. It’s been an adjustment, but it’s nice to work in a team setting. Sometimes freelancing can get a bit lonely!

It’s tempting to get home from work and settle down for an evening of Netflix, but Ian and I have been trying to get out and make the most of the summer. We’ve filled our evenings by taking bike rides along the country paths, signing up for private sailing lessons, and eating dinner out on our patio.

Towards the end of the month, Ian’s cousin made the trip from St. Louis to spend a weekend with us in Wisconsin. Our agenda consisted of an evening out on the city deck listening to live music, sipping wine at the von Stiehl steer roast, and driving up to Fish Creek.

The month ended back in Madison for two celebrations: my Mom’s birthday and my parent’s anniversary. The festivities included roasting marshmallows, watching movies, and giggling during the Bubble Run.
