Month in Review: February 2019

It feels surreal to flip the calendar over and enter March. Time is flying by, and I want to make sure I’m continuing to grow both in my relationships and my design business. Looking back on February, I’m glad I was able to balance these two areas in my life and schedule nights out with friends and attend networking events.

One of the highlights from February was a visit to Lake Geneva’s ice castle. Ian and I spent the afternoon walking through the castle in awe of its beauty and warming up by the fire near the shoreline. It was a magical experience that almost made me forget how numb my hands were. Oh, the joys of winter!

Up next on our calendar was a trip to Madison to spend time with friends. It felt surreal to be back on campus and walk past all the restaurants we frequented during our early dating days. How has it been five years since we lived in Madison?! Time is going by so quickly.

Once back in Milwaukee, I attended my first Creative Mornings networking event. I was nervous to go alone, but one of my goals this year is to get out in the community more. When you work for yourself, you can get comfortable being alone, but I want to push myself to network and meet other local creatives. This was a wonderful first step, and I’m looking forward to attending more events in the future.

We ended the month with a quiet weekend at home. The only thing on the agenda was to take a leisurely walk through the woods, snuggle up with our reading material, and make hot chocolate. It was the perfect way to say farewell to February and gear up for the start of a new month.

Month in Review: February, 2018

February was my month of “yes.” I’m a constant over-thinker and often talk myself out of trying something new. I feel safe inside my comfort zone and like the familiarity of my routines. Maybe it was the winter blues catching up to me, but I started off the month in a funk. Many areas of my life felt stagnant and I was craving some sort of change – so I decided to open myself up to new opportunities and say yes” more often. This may sound scary if you are in the same boat, but this doesn’t have to be daunting! It can be as simple as breaking your weekly meal plan and grabbing dinner with a friend, or skipping the gym for an evening walk in the park. The main goal is to mix up your routine and get inspired again. Here are a few ways I said yes” in February.

Our local mall can be overwhelming during winter weekends. Milwaukeeans are cooped up inside due to cold temps and frequent snow flurries so they flock to the mall. Therefore, I usually steer clear of this teen hangout, but Ian needed to stop by the Apple store and I decided to tag along. While browsing storefronts I came across a new beauty shop with this perfect Valentine’s day photo opt.

After a long work week, it’s enticing to stay home, pile on the blankets, and watch a movie. However, Ian and I still have so much to discover in Milwaukee, so he was able to pull my out of my cozy vibes and talk me into visiting a brewery. It had a beautiful cream brick taproom and bag toss! It was the perfect way to get reenergized for the weekend and get out of the house.

We continued to be tourists in our own town and booked a tour of Pabst Mansion on a quite Saturday afternoon. It was eye-opening to hear about the rich history of breweries in Wisconsin and take in the beautiful architecture around every corner of this home.

While these were small outings, they were enough to turn my winter blues around. I felt more energized towards the end of the month and I’m excited to see what adventures March brings!

Here is a short video showcasing one second from each day in February. Enjoy!

It may have just been a case of the winter blues, but I felt like I was in a rut in February. I cut back on my blogging schedule, only posting once a week, and ultimately I felt uninspired. In an attempt to shake off my melancholy, I focused on the things that made me smile. This month those things were maple syrup and hockey.

To kick off the month, Ian and I drove to Madison on a 60˚ springlike day. We spent the afternoon with my family walking around campus, stocking-up on alumni gear on State Street and grabbing dinner a few blocks away from my college apartment. We ended the night by cheering on the Men’s Badger hockey team to victory.

Before we headed back home, we were able to witness my parents’ new hobby – making maple syrup! Luckily they were already hard at work before we came to visit and we were able to sneak home with a bottle of our own! I have a feeling we are all going to get hooked on homemade maple syrup and it will be hard to go back to store bought!

After our trip to Madison, everything changed overnight. The hints of green grass we saw over the weekend went into hiding under a thick blanket of snow. I shouldn’t have been surprised, we live in Wisconsin after all! But it was difficult to transition back into winter gear after a glorious weekend basking under the warm sun.

As we enter March I am hopeful that we will be graced with warmer weather, but we have a few fun events planned that will keep our spirits high regardless of how much snow is on the ground.

I hope you all had a wonderful February. I would love to hear the highlight of your month in the comments below!
