When summer ends and we enter into fall I’m often at a loss on how to decorate. I favor cool tones and shy away from filling our home with autumn’s traditional orange hues. While homes filled with rich plaids and orange pumpkins look stunning as I scroll through Pinterest, they don’t feel true to my personal style.

On a quest to find harmony between my interior color pallet and celebrating the fall season, I chose to paint my own mini pumpkins. This is a great way to seamlessly incorporate festive pieces into your home – no matter your color scheme! Since I prefer cooler colors, I painted my pumpkins in shades of blue. After a few coats of paint, you would never know these started out as bright orange!

Twine Flower Vase

DIY Twine Flower Vase

In elementary school we had a unit on recycling that made a big impact on me. Maybe it was the images of poor little animals tangled up in trash or the idea that my actions could make a difference, but after that unit I became the girl who picks up trash on the sidewalk and cringes when I see people throw away items that can be recycled.

While I’m passionate about recycling, I also have a soft spot for upcycling items. Take these flower vases – they started off as Oui yogurt jars! Being made out of glass, a million thoughts rushed through my head on how I could reuse them. I settled on turning them into rustic flower vases. With a bit of hot glue and twine, these yogurt jars were repurposed into the perfect centerpiece for our kitchen island.

Regardless of the convince of email, I will always be an advocate of snail mail. There is something magical about opening up your mail box, pulling out an envelope with a handwritten address, and anticipating what news is nestled inside. Nowadays, weddings seem to be the only event that gets society excited about choosing stamps, modern calligraphy, and envelope liners. I’m here to advocate the use of these design elements in every day correspondence. So refrain from sending your grandmother another happy birthday email and pull out a pen and piece of paper to create something memorable.
