Month in Review: April 2019

From sunny days in the park to losing power during a snow storm, April was full of highs and lows. It was difficult to make outdoor plans in advance since we never knew what type of weather we would be graced with. Luckily, we were able to fill our month with an array of events that kept us in good spirits despite the unruly weather patterns.

We began the month with an afternoon trip to the Mitchel Park Domes. It was a mini escape from Wisconsin’s dreary weather. As soon as you enter the domes you are transported to warmer climates. While I’m quite fond of the rainforest dome (it has a waterfall!) Ian and I ended up spending the majority of our time in the desert dome. It was less crowded and allowed us to sit back, close our eyes, and pretend we were on a desert vacation.

As a belated birthday celebration, Ian purchased tickets to the Milwaukee Art Museum’s Art in Bloom exhibit. As soon as we walked through the front doors we were greeted with the most wonderful scent. The entire atrium was decorated with flowers and hosted a series of events. You could sit back with a cocktail, watch a live painting, and listen to a harpist. Once we pulled ourselves away from the atrium, we ventured into the permanent collection wing for the main event! Local florist created stunning floral arrangements that were inspired by paintings. It was easy to lose track of time in the exhibit and Ian and I ended up spending the majority of our Saturday wandering around the event, soaking in the beauty of all of the flowers.

It’s clear that I have a deep love for flowers, therefore, it comes as no surprise that I was delighted to see blooms start peeking out of the ground this month. Luckily, these are hearty flowers since they had to endure a few snow storms in April. I don’t know if there is anything that sums up spring in Wisconsin more than the sight of daffodils covered in snow.

Month in Review: April, 2018

As we approached the beginning of April, I already knew it was going to be a busy month. Our calendar was full of hand written reminders for upcoming events, and while I was excited for each and every one of them, a small amount of anxiety set in. Being an introvert, I recharge with downtime and April did not allow for many quiet evenings. However, looking back I’m thankful for our busy month and all the memories it created.

Right from the start we were in celebration mode! I was lucky to have my birthday fall on Easter this year, so our family gathering was twice as fun. We enjoyed a delicious meal, ate cake, and laughed while we played board games.

After our Easter celebrations, we returned to Milwaukee and were met with snow. Yes, snow! This could have been my breaking point, but I decided to stay positive. This was not an easy choice, but visiting cozy local coffee helped lift my spirits.

With the snow sticking around for a few days, Ian and I took advantage of local indoor activities. We attended the Milwaukee Makers Market at the Discovery World and were surprised by the free exhibits! We wandered through the aquarium, played on a ship, and learned about waste water treatment. It was hard to pull Ian out of the exhibits, but we were celebrating our eight year dating anniversary that night and needed to head off to our dinner reservation.

April was a busy month for birthdays! My Grandma turned 93 this year and a big group of family members got together to celebrate. The afternoon was packed with catching up with cousins, eating wonderful food, and playing outside. (The snow had finally melted!!)

We closed out the month in the best possible way – with a wedding. Two of our close college friends tied the knot and hosted the most beautiful wedding weekend. Ian stood up in the wedding and I got emotional seeing all of our close friends together again in one room. We danced the night away at the reception and took full advantage of the photo booth to snap a few pictures from the night.

How is it May already? April seemed to come and go in the blink of an eye! I’m not complaining, though. Time slipped by us as we celebrated birthdays, took sunset walks down by the river and attended events around town.

Our month began in the best way possible – with birthday cake and a cappella! To celebrate my 26th birthday, Ian took me to see our Alma mater’s a cappella group, The Mad Hatters, preferom. After singing “Varsity” we drove to Lambeau Field to enjoy dinner at 1919 and were greeted with swarms of Prom goers. I instantly felt underdressed as my outfit lacked tulle and sequins, but Ian assured me I looked beautiful none-the-less.

The following day, Ian and I woke up early to make the drive down to Milwaukee for the My Flippin’ Friends pilot party. After sipping mimosas and cheering on the cast, we wandered around the Third Ward and grabbed lunch with a friend.

After an eventful weekend, we were ready to relax! We took sunset walks down by the water to watch the pelicans in-between Ian’s study sessions (he was preparing for a professional licensing exam.)

Before we knew it, Easter was upon us! We decided not to travel this year, so Ian could squeeze in as much study time as he could on Saturday. After a long day with his head in books, he was ready to have a quiet Sunday. To celebrate, we hiked out to a local waterfall and enjoyed brunch at The Creamery.

To close out the month, we drove to Madison and Ian took his Professional Engineering exam. It was an 8-hour exam, so while he was locked in a room solving complicated problems my mom and I were at the Henry Vilas zoo. I think we got the better end of the stick! The remainder of the weekend was spent celebrating my grandma’s birthday and sitting around the fire roasting our first s’mores of the season.
