Month in Review: June, 2017

June was an emotional month in a lot of ways. As we celebrated birthdays, hiked nature trails and perused farmers market stalls fear tangled itself within my happiness. Try as I might to push it aside, I fell asleep most nights worrying about my upcoming surgery. Luckily, I had Ian at my side and he continued to push me to enjoy the moment and make the most of each day.

It was easy to follow his advice at the beginning of the month because we celebrated his 26th birthday! Since a lot of our friends live in the Milwaukee area, we decided to drive down for the weekend and let our inner child out at the Dave & Busters arcade.

After our bellies were full of ice cream cake, we packed up the car for another road trip. This time our destination was Mt. Horeb! We spent the weekend catching up with Ian’s family, checking out the renovated museum and playing bingo at the Summer Frolic.

As each week passed I was more aware that my surgery was approaching. To keep my mind off of it, Ian drove me to Whitefish Sand Dunes State Park. We enjoyed a picnic on the beach, hiked out to the caves and danced in the rain.

Then, in the middle of the week Ian and I had the pleasure of showing my parents around the Farmers Market. They were on their way home from Door County and decided to make a pit stop and see us for a night! We had so much fun hearing about their trip and catching up we stayed out until 10pm! I was a bit sleepy when my alarm went off for work the next morning, but it was all worth it!

At last, I couldn’t ignore the date on the calendar. It was surgery day. I could feel all the prayers and well wishes that were sent my way because instead of feeling anxious, I was calm. The surgery went better than expected and I was able to go home that afternoon. While we were confident the tumor was benign, hearing that the test results were negative was a huge relief.

My mind is often my thief of joy, so I was thankful I had supportive friends and family around me this month. They all encouraged me to stay positive and make the most of each moment without shadowing it in fear. Looking back, we had a busy month filled with love and adventure – even with my surgery looming on the calendar. I’m beyond relieved to have it behind me and I’m looking forward to getting back into the swing of things as I reach the end of my recovery time!

Month in Review: April, 2017

How is it May already? April seemed to come and go in the blink of an eye! I’m not complaining, though. Time slipped by us as we celebrated birthdays, took sunset walks down by the river and attended events around town.

Our month began in the best way possible – with birthday cake and a cappella! To celebrate my 26th birthday, Ian took me to see our Alma mater’s a cappella group, The Mad Hatters, preferom. After singing “Varsity” we drove to Lambeau Field to enjoy dinner at 1919 and were greeted with swarms of Prom goers. I instantly felt underdressed as my outfit lacked tulle and sequins, but Ian assured me I looked beautiful none-the-less.

The following day, Ian and I woke up early to make the drive down to Milwaukee for the My Flippin’ Friends pilot party. After sipping mimosas and cheering on the cast, we wandered around the Third Ward and grabbed lunch with a friend.

After an eventful weekend, we were ready to relax! We took sunset walks down by the water to watch the pelicans in-between Ian’s study sessions (he was preparing for a professional licensing exam.)

Before we knew it, Easter was upon us! We decided not to travel this year, so Ian could squeeze in as much study time as he could on Saturday. After a long day with his head in books, he was ready to have a quiet Sunday. To celebrate, we hiked out to a local waterfall and enjoyed brunch at The Creamery.

To close out the month, we drove to Madison and Ian took his Professional Engineering exam. It was an 8-hour exam, so while he was locked in a room solving complicated problems my mom and I were at the Henry Vilas zoo. I think we got the better end of the stick! The remainder of the weekend was spent celebrating my grandma’s birthday and sitting around the fire roasting our first s’mores of the season.

Month in Review: February, 2017

It may have just been a case of the winter blues, but I felt like I was in a rut in February. I cut back on my blogging schedule, only posting once a week, and ultimately I felt uninspired. In an attempt to shake off my melancholy, I focused on the things that made me smile. This month those things were maple syrup and hockey.

To kick off the month, Ian and I drove to Madison on a 60˚ springlike day. We spent the afternoon with my family walking around campus, stocking-up on alumni gear on State Street and grabbing dinner a few blocks away from my college apartment. We ended the night by cheering on the Men’s Badger hockey team to victory.

Before we headed back home, we were able to witness my parents’ new hobby – making maple syrup! Luckily they were already hard at work before we came to visit and we were able to sneak home with a bottle of our own! I have a feeling we are all going to get hooked on homemade maple syrup and it will be hard to go back to store bought!

After our trip to Madison, everything changed overnight. The hints of green grass we saw over the weekend went into hiding under a thick blanket of snow. I shouldn’t have been surprised, we live in Wisconsin after all! But it was difficult to transition back into winter gear after a glorious weekend basking under the warm sun.

As we enter March I am hopeful that we will be graced with warmer weather, but we have a few fun events planned that will keep our spirits high regardless of how much snow is on the ground.

I hope you all had a wonderful February. I would love to hear the highlight of your month in the comments below!
