Month in Review: June, 2017

June was an emotional month in a lot of ways. As we celebrated birthdays, hiked nature trails and perused farmers market stalls fear tangled itself within my happiness. Try as I might to push it aside, I fell asleep most nights worrying about my upcoming surgery. Luckily, I had Ian at my side and he continued to push me to enjoy the moment and make the most of each day.

It was easy to follow his advice at the beginning of the month because we celebrated his 26th birthday! Since a lot of our friends live in the Milwaukee area, we decided to drive down for the weekend and let our inner child out at the Dave & Busters arcade.

After our bellies were full of ice cream cake, we packed up the car for another road trip. This time our destination was Mt. Horeb! We spent the weekend catching up with Ian’s family, checking out the renovated museum and playing bingo at the Summer Frolic.

As each week passed I was more aware that my surgery was approaching. To keep my mind off of it, Ian drove me to Whitefish Sand Dunes State Park. We enjoyed a picnic on the beach, hiked out to the caves and danced in the rain.

Then, in the middle of the week Ian and I had the pleasure of showing my parents around the Farmers Market. They were on their way home from Door County and decided to make a pit stop and see us for a night! We had so much fun hearing about their trip and catching up we stayed out until 10pm! I was a bit sleepy when my alarm went off for work the next morning, but it was all worth it!

At last, I couldn’t ignore the date on the calendar. It was surgery day. I could feel all the prayers and well wishes that were sent my way because instead of feeling anxious, I was calm. The surgery went better than expected and I was able to go home that afternoon. While we were confident the tumor was benign, hearing that the test results were negative was a huge relief.

My mind is often my thief of joy, so I was thankful I had supportive friends and family around me this month. They all encouraged me to stay positive and make the most of each moment without shadowing it in fear. Looking back, we had a busy month filled with love and adventure – even with my surgery looming on the calendar. I’m beyond relieved to have it behind me and I’m looking forward to getting back into the swing of things as I reach the end of my recovery time!

DIY Bath Tray

DIY Bath Tray

One of my favorite ways to pamper myself is to draw up a warm bubble bath. Paired with relaxing music, a few candles and a good book – this is the perfect environment to reenergize. In the past, I placed a lot of faith in my ability not to get my book wet or drop it in the tub, and luckily I never had any major incidents! However, this always caused a small amount of stress in what was supposed to be a relaxing experience. So I scrolled around the internet and found the perfect solution – a bath tray!

DIY Bath Tray

Instead of paying $30+ to order a bath tray online, I decided I would try to make one myself. Bonus: I was able to customize the tray to fit perfectly in our tub! After taking a few measurements Ian and I set off to the hardware store to pick out our supplies.

If you look at the project and think it would be difficult to complete – you are wrong! This DIY is as easy as it gets. (It doesn’t even require nails!) All you will need is a saw, some wood glue, wood stain and resin. That’s it! While the staining process will require some patience, the end product is well worth the wait.

Here’s how you can make your own bath tray!

Materials:

  • 1×8 wood board
  • Saw
  • Wood glue
  • Wood stain
  • Oil-based Minwax Polyurethane

How to:

  • Measure the full width of your tub as well as the width of the sides of your tub. These measurements will be used to place 2-inch wood stoppers under the bath tray in order to keep it in place
  • Cut two 2-inch pieces of wood from the board
  • Cut the board to the width of your tub measurement
  • Use a ruler and mark off the width of the sides of your tub under the wood board
  • Place wood glue on the inside of these markings and secure the 2-inch wood pieces down to dry
  • Leave overnight to dry
  • Sand the bath tray and begin the staining process
  • Once you have achieved your desired stain color seal with a coat of polyurethane
  • Let it dry overnight then you are ready to use your bathtub tray!

Strawberry Basil Lemonade

Strawberry Basil Lemonade

With the sun going down later in the evening, we like to end our nights out on the patio. While Ian likes to crack open a cold beer while we watch the sunset, I often opt for a glass of lemon water. Lately, I’ve wanted to spice things up and thought I would try and recreate a refreshing summer drink I found at a local restaurant – Strawberry Basil Lemonade.

Strawberry Basil Lemonade

This drink does not require an excess amount of work and makes a simple store bought lemonade feel indulgent. It can be a bit sweet, depending on your taste, so you can water down the lemonade by adding a few more cups of water than instructed.
